From Successful Businessman to Wrongfully Convicted – A Story of Unbreakable Resilience
In 2003, Rusty Labuschagne had it all. A thriving safari business, his own aircraft, a fishing resort on Lake Kariba – the successful Zimbabwean businessman lived a life many could only dream of. Then, in a single moment, everything changed.
Framed by a poacher, betrayed by the police and courts, Rusty was wrongfully convicted of murder without a body and against police evidence. He was sentenced to Zimbabwe’s notorious prison system during Mugabe’s rule, where he would spend the next 10 harrowing years of his life.
A Journey Through Darkness
This is not just a prison story. It’s a profound exploration of what it means to be human when everything is stripped away. Rusty endured conditions most would find unbearable:
- The notorious Chikurubi Maximum Security Prison
- Daily food shortages and no running water
- Watching people die around him every day
- Losing his freedom, dignity, and everything he had worked for
Remarkably, 70% of this book was written on a smuggled mobile phone from inside his prison cell, with all sketches created by Rusty himself after his release.
Finding Freedom Behind Bars
What makes Beating Chains truly extraordinary is not the suffering, but the transformation. Through faith in God, unwavering mental strength, and remarkable leadership, Rusty didn’t just survive – he discovered true freedom through:
- Forgiveness – Learning to forgive those who wronged him
- Gratitude – Finding reasons to be thankful even in darkness
- Humility – Understanding what truly matters in life
- Resilience – Developing the inner strength to endure the unimaginable
- Purpose – Helping fellow inmates and finding meaning in suffering
Life Lessons That Transform
Rusty shares profound insights on harnessing your inner strength, showing compassion in the hardest moments, and rebuilding yourself from the inside out. His message of hope and freedom resonates with anyone facing adversity, injustice, or life’s toughest challenges.
Released in 2013, Rusty now travels the international speaking circuit, delivering his dramatic and transformational message with sincerity and humility that immediately strikes all who hear him.

Hi Sandra
Trust all is well with You, Rusty and the rest of the Family.
I will be sure to complete the review below and wow, what a powerful book and how it has so connected with me having witnessed throughout my childhood and early upbringing similar persecution experienced by members of my family (irrespective of race, colour, creed and religion) and the rebuilding of one’s faith, persona and character over the last 51 years of my life. On another level and like Rusty, I spent most of my formative years with my father in the bush and to this date I continue to have a deep natural and almost in built connection and affiliation with the African bush.
I have strongly shared Your story with my work colleagues and the inspiration, hope and conviction it has reminded and reinvigorated in myself of the ability and conviction to refuse to be held down by mental and at times physical chains and the importance of being human.

A most fascinating and inspiring book. One of total dedication of staying alive and beating all the odds. A pity that those who mistreated and abused Rusty will never be brought to justice. Maybe in the next life.
Excellent testimony to share with the world
As an ex-Rhodesian, I am very familiar with Rusty’s background. I actually knew his dad, Wally. The buildup in his successful business was typical of the tourist and hunting industry in Zimbabwe at the time. His saga and resulting treatment in prison as written is almost unbelievable. His inner strength and character, together with his strong religion, God’s grace and mercy, are the key to his survival. The best book I have read in a long time, couldn’t put it down.
Hi Rusty. I am still reading the book. Prefer the paperback… It is a Thriller!! Can’t imagine that you went through all that and are still standing. I enjoy your Instagram messages. You say everything as it is and it is such a life lesson everyday. Thank you very much. May God bless you and your family
